This is a draft for the mode:Becoming beta. It will be reviewed and finalised before public launch.
mode:Becoming holds some of the most personal things people write down. We treat that seriously: we collect what the app needs to work, we never sell it, and you can download or delete it at any time.
What we collect
- Your account: email address, and your name if you sign in with Google.
- What you tell us during setup: focus areas, motivations, obstacles, time per day, energy time, and your age as a birth year.
- What you create: habits and their logs, habits you’re breaking and the urges you log, journal entries, check-ins, goals, milestones, weekly reviews, and, if you turn those modules on, prayers and dreams.
- If you turn on reminders: a push address for each device, provided by your browser.
- Basic technical logs (errors and request paths) to keep the service working. These never contain your journal text or urge details.
How we use it
Only to run mode:Becoming for you: show your progress, send the reminders you set, and work out your streaks, patterns and weekly review. We don’t show ads and we don’t sell or share your data for advertising.
Mo, our AI
Mo is mode:Becoming’s AI. It is off until you turn it on, and you choose which parts of your records it may read: habits, goals, check-ins, weekly reviews, and only if you switch them on, your journal, prayers, dreams and the names of habits you’re breaking. Journal entries you mark private are never sent, and urge notes and triggers are never sent.
When you use Mo (sorting a Talk about your day, planning your week, a weekly summary, help restarting, asking your history, rewriting your identity statement, or reflecting on a dream), we send what you said and only the records that feature needs to Anthropic, our AI provider, and show you the result. Mo never changes anything on its own: every suggested change waits for your approval. We record that an AI request happened and how large it was (for fair-use limits and costs), not what it said. You can turn Mo off at any time in Settings, and we keep a record of when you turned it on or off.
Talk (telling the app about your day) sends what you say, with the names of the habits you’re building, your goals’ titles and numbers, today’s planned steps, your life area names and your currency, to Anthropic when AI is on for habits; otherwise it’s matched on our servers. Habits you’re breaking are included only if you turn on “Habits I’m breaking (for Talk)”; without it they’re matched on our servers. What you said isn’t kept: only what’s saved from it is, such as the journal entry it drafts (private by default). When Mo has no question for you, what it sorted is saved straight away and shown to you item by item, with Change and Undo; otherwise you see it first. A saved day can be undone the same day. Money you say you spent is kept in your Spending (amount, currency, category and what it was for), and a mood or energy Mo worked out from how you talked is marked as a guess until you change it. What you’re manifesting is matched on our servers and never sent to AI.
Telling Mo what you want to start (at the end of setting up, or from New habit) sends what you say, with the names of the ready-made habits, your life area names, the time you said you have, when you have energy and what usually gets in your way, to Anthropic when AI is on for habits; otherwise it’s matched to ready-made habits on our servers. Your identity statement and journal are never included. What you said isn’t kept, and no habit is created until you choose to start it.
Photos
Photos you add to habits are shrunk on your phone before upload, which removes location, camera and time details; we strip them again on our side. They’re kept in our database or a private storage bucket, shown only through the app to people allowed to see them, private to you unless you put one in a story or a community post, and deleted with your account.
Your circle, stories and the community
- These are for people 18 and over, and only start when you pick a nickname. Your real name and email are never shown.
- Stories you share with your circle are visible to the people you’ve added, for 24 hours. “Only me” stories are just for you.
- Community posts are visible to other members. Anonymous posts never show who wrote them; our moderators can see the author only if a post is held for checking or reported.
- Posts, comments and shared stories are checked automatically to keep the community safe: rules catch contact details and links, and when AI is set up the text is also sent to Anthropic to screen for harm. This is a safety check, separate from the AI help you choose to turn on.
- Doing a habit with someone (Habits together): they see that habit’s name, whether you did it today, and how many days you’ve both done it. Not your reasons, notes or other habits. Either of you can stop it; blocking ends it.
- “People doing this” counts on habits and challenges are totals across everyone, never names, and are only shown once at least 10 people are counted.
- You can delete your posts, block anyone (it hides you from each other everywhere), and report anything. Nothing private, such as habits you’re breaking, is ever shared unless you write it in a post yourself.
How long we keep things
- Everything you create stays until you delete it or delete your account.
- A daily “you used the app” marker (a date, nothing else) is kept to understand whether mode:Becoming is helping people come back. It’s deleted with your account.
- Server error logs are kept by our hosting provider for a limited period and never contain your writing.
- Backups expire on a fixed schedule: the database provider’s restore history after a few days, and our encrypted monthly backups after 90 days.
Dictation
Voice notes: when Mo is on, a voice note you record in Talk is sent to our speech-to-text provider (OpenAI) to be turned into text, then dropped. We never store the audio. The provider doesn’t use it to train its models, and may keep it briefly for abuse monitoring under its API terms. Only the text goes on to Mo, as above.
The microphone button uses your browser’s own speech recognition. In Chrome and some other browsers, your audio is processed by the browser maker (for example Google) to turn it into text. mode:Becoming only receives the text.
Who processes data for us
- Neon (database hosting) and Google Cloud (the website, application servers and private photo storage), both in the United States.
- Resend, to email your sign-in codes and, only if you ask for them, evening reminder emails.
- Google, if you choose Google sign-in.
- Your browser’s push service (Google, Apple or Mozilla) to deliver reminders. Reminders can hide habit names on the lock screen, and habits you’re breaking are never named.
- Anthropic, only when you’ve turned AI on and use an AI feature.
- OpenAI, to turn a voice note into text when Mo is on. The audio is never stored.
- Stripe, if you subscribe to Plus. We never see your card details.
- Sentry, for error reports. These contain the app page or route that failed, never your writing, email or account id.
Your choices and rights
- Download everything we hold about you from Settings, as a file you keep.
- Delete your account from Settings. This erases your data from our live database immediately; backups held by our database provider expire on their normal schedule.
- Turn reminders, reminder emails, lock-screen names, the weekly review nudge and the comeback nudge on or off at any time.
- Turn AI help on or off, and choose what it may read, in Settings.
- Ask us to correct anything, or to explain what we hold, by contacting us below.
Age
mode:Becoming is for people aged 13 and over. We don’t knowingly create accounts for anyone younger.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by our hosting providers. Every request is checked so that only you can read or change your records.
